So, I've been here just about a week so far. There's not tons to say, except it's hot, we work a lot, time passes so slowly (I feel like I've been here six months already!), and the food isn't as bad as I thought.
There are no babies in the baby home yet (no one knows when they'll come), so right now I'm masquerading as an intern. There are quite a few of us (the thirteenth and final intern will arrive tomorrow). So, I'm going to tell you what has been "normal" so far, but it's probably not an accurate representation since I haven't even been here a week.
A week day starts nice and early with breakfast at 6:30. If I'm lucky, I will sleep in till 6:30, if not, I will have been up before that (5:30 being my earliest wake up time yet). After breakfast, I read my Bible and twiddle my thumbs until 9:00 rolls around when the interns meet for a prayer meeting. After the prayer meeting, we all head to the director's office to figure out what we're doing for the day. This meeting lasts for about half an hour to an hour and then we get to work.
Jobs that we might be doing during this time could be: cleaning the guest kitchen/dorms (no easy feet, mind you, since they are rarely properly and completely cleaned and there's dust everywhere), picking up trash after a storm, emptying a full and dusty shed and cleaning rabbit poop out of it (no joke), and emptying the (now-dead) fish pool of water with only buckets (my shoulders are ripped now). We work until 2:15 when we get to stop for lunch (foooooooooood!!!!!!! yes!!!!!!!), and then depending on how we're feeling and what needs to be done, we'll take a break and nap or hang with the kids, or well go back to work.
We'll either continue an unfinished project until dinner (6:00) or a little before, or we'll move onto a new task. Depending on the progress we've made, we'll get to end a little before dinner to wash up, or we'll barely stop for dinner and then go right back to work afterwards.
If we've finished all our work, we get to chill with the kids until their bedtime (8:30). I often play basketball with them, even though I'm barely able to stand at this point in the day. Usually, I'll also take a shower at 8:00 because I stink to high heaven (we all smell sooooooo bad after a work day!). Once the kids are in bed, the interns like to chill out together in the guest kitchen, eating food, playing games, and talking. Then anywhere from 9:30 to 11:30 I'll head to bed and thus ends my day.
Weekends are slower, with breakfast at 9:00, lunch at 1:00, and dinner at 6:00. Saturdays we are mostly in charge of playing with the kids unless something urgent or unusual comes up. This week, half of my Saturday was taken up by a quincenera and I just have to say I don't understand them. It was like a wedding without the groom. Sundays are incredibly slow, with church starting at 11:00 and ending at 12:30. I can't say much more about Sundays because it still is Sunday. We did get to go to town today though, but due to McDonald's poor maintenance, there was no wi-fi, and so here I am, writing this blog post with no one to read it. Oh well.
Here are a few other random things you all should know about.
1) A team with a former restaurant owner came down this week, so we got to deep clean the kitchen and guest dorms. If they weren't properly cleaned, the guy would chew out the director, which wasn't ideal since he is on the board and signs the checks. Well, I'm proud to say that we did such a good job that he had no complaints and even bought us a new fridge (ours had just broken that day), a new swamp cooler (which wasn't working properly), and new tables (the ones in the kitchen were not looking so good). Not to mention, there were several new kitchen gadgets (knives! coolers! pans! oh my!) that are probably being left with us. :)
2) The other interns are great, we all get along super well. Like, I think I might die when they leave me at the end of the summer. It feels like I've known them for an eternity even though it hasn't yet been a week. Part of that might be because the water has gone out at the ranch a few times and we haven't taken showers for a while....... Things like that may be one of the reasons time goes a lot slower in Mexico.
3) My Spanish is improving. Speaking is still not my strong point (my vocabulary and grammar are suffering a lot), but I can understand a good amount depending on who's talking. Some people are near impossible to understand, whereas others are fairly easy.
4) I can't believe I'm going to be here for a year. One week seems like I've been away from my family for eons, and it hasn't even been a complete week! When I don't think about you guys at home (sorry, guys), it's tons easier, so that's kind of how I roll all day long. And now that I'm writing this for all of you, I'm kind of starting to miss you a lot.
5) Church is going to be lots harder than I thought. Even though I knew the tunes of some of the songs, I couldn't sing them in Spanish because I didn't know them, and I couldn't sing them in English because I couldn't focus on English with Spanish all around me. I understood most of the sermon, but understanding most of it is still light years different from understanding all of it. It's going to be a harder year than I thought.
I think that's all. If you have anything you want me to blog about, send me a question (facebook, email, comment), and I will eventually get to it.
